The Secret of Caring For Life

While reading about Chinese literature I was directed to many short stories that reminded me of the bed time stories that my mother use to read at night when I was young, rich in meaning behind simple short stories and values that one should carry and teach. This was one of them:

Cook Ting was cutting up an ox for Lord Wen-hui. At every touch of his hand, every heave of his shoulder, every move of his feet, every thrust of his knee—zip! zoop! He slithered the knife along with a zing, and all was in perfect rhythm, as though he were performing the dance of the Mulberry Grove or keeping time to the Ching-shou music.
“Ah, this is marvelous!” said Lord Wen-hui. “Imagine skill reaching such heights!”
Cook Ting laid down his knife and replied, “What I care about is the Way, which goes beyond skill. When I first began cutting up oxen, all I could see was the ox itself. After three years I no longer saw the whole ox. And now—now I go at it  (shen) and don’t look with my eyes. Perception and understanding have come to a stop and spirit moves where it wants. I go along with the natural makeup, strike in the big hollows, guide the knife through the big openings, and follow things as they are. So I never touch the smallest ligament or tendon, much less a main joint.
“A good cook changes his knife once a year—because he cuts. A mediocre cook changes his knife once a month—because he hacks. I’ve had this knife of mine for nineteen years and I’ve cut up thousands of oxen with it, and yet the blade is as good as though it had just come from the grindstone. There are spaces between the joints, and the blade of the knife has really no thickness. If you insert what has no thickness into such spaces, then there’s plenty of room—more than enough for the blade to play about in. That’s why after nineteen years the blade of my knife is still as good as when it first came from the grindstone.
“However, whenever I come to a complicated place, I size up the difficulties, tell myself to watch out and be careful, keep my eyes on what I’m doing, work very slowly, and move the knife with the greatest subtlety, until—flop! the whole thing comes apart like a clod of earth crumbling to the ground. I stand there holding the knife and look all around me, completely satisfied and reluctant to move on, and then I wipe off the knife and put it away.”
“Excellent!” said Lord Wen-hui. “I have heard the words of Cook Ting and learned how to care for life!” [The Complete Works of Chuang Tzu, 50-51.]

Firewall Scripts

Some firewall commands for the command line This is definitely simple but is something interesting that I didn’t know about.

First of all what is netsh:

“Netsh is a command-line scripting utility that allows you to, either locally or remotely, display or modify the network configuration of a computer that is currently running.” – Microsoft

//This will display the windows firewall configurations:

netsh firewall show config

//This command will create a batch file that will disable the windows firewall:

copy con disable.bat
netsh firewall set opmode disable
^z

//This command will create a batch file that will enable the windows firewall:

copy con enable.bat
netsh firewall set opmode enable
^z

//This command will create a batch file that will open specified ports in the windows firewall:

copy con openports.bat
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 80 WEBserver
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 21 FTPserver
^z

//This command will create a batch file that will close specified ports in the windows firewall:

copy con closeports.bat
netsh firewall delete portopening TCP 80
netsh firewall delete portopening TCP 21
^z

//This command will create an auto run that to execute one or more of the batch files above:

copy con autorun.inf
action=configfirewall //to display an option of running autorun when media inserted
shellexecute-openports.bat

^z = ctrl + z>

Everyone can be Iron Men

Cutting edge technology usually is developed with military purposes. And most often than not it makes to the general and provides for improvement in our quality of life. Exoskeletons, as portrayed by numerous heroes like Iron Men,  have always been a dream of humanity, it provides for a stronger and enduring army, or a better protected factory worker that won’t have to strain its body while performing its duties among many other uses. But the greatest use in my opinion is with rehabilitation of  mobility deprived individuals, granting mobility to people who have lost it or never had it.

In this TED talk Eythor Bender, CEO of Berkeley Bionics, presents 2 uses of exoskeletons developed by his company improving and extending or natural body limitations.

How to sync Firefox 4 to Android

For a long time as a Firefox user I envied my friends that switched to Google’s Chrome, due to all the sync capabilities between Chrome and Android. But Mozilla Firefox has finally acknowledge that Android has taken great part of the mobile market, and decided to please us. It is clear that Chrome and Android, being developed by Google, will always be more compatible with each other, but for now it still a good capability to have.

Cnet has posted a great how to video on how to sync your Firefox and Android bookmarks.

The Story of Electronics

Gadgets facilitate our lives in many ways, we learned to live and depend on them sometimes we can’t even remember a time in which we didn’t used them. But in order to satisfy Wall Street hunger for profit, companies developed “programmed obsolescence” a plan that forces consumers to replace electronics periodically instead of simply upgrading parts. This model guarantees a continuous revenue stream and high valued stocks to companies but it has a serious collateral effect the steep increases in trash full of harmful substances or e-trash.

Android Devices Screen Capture

If you ever came across and screen capture tutorial video posted on youtube.com or another video sharing website, and like me wondered how were they able to screen shoot, capture or even video cast here is the answer:

I have fond ways of doing by using the SDK tools which isn’t nearly as easy as mighty pocket has made, and another advantage to it is no root needed.

The software is available for Windows and Macs.

Another defet for internet users’ rights

According to Ars Technica UK Parliament passed the Digital Economy bill, the equivalent to the French three strikes law. The bill grants UK courts the power to completely block websites, it forces ISPs to send P2P users warning letters in behalf of copyright holders, also allows for throttling Internet and to complete the total loss of right ISPs will be required to disconnect repeater offender

The bill allows the UK courts to order complete blocks on websites, it requires ISPs to start sending P2P warning letters from copyright holders, and it opens the door to throttling and Internet disconnection for repeat infringement.

Although this new regulation is only effective within the United Kingdom territory, it is not the first country to enact such provisions. Australians have had more comprehensive legislations (C’th Broadcasting Services Amendment (Online Services) Act 1999 and C’th Classification Act, and State/Territory Classification Acts) enacted throughout all its territory since 1999, likewise the French Government has enacted , the Hadopi and Hadopi2, similar rulings in 2009. And with the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) being discussed in closed doors by the USA,  European Commission, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Canada, Jordan, Mexico,Morocco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and United Arab Emirates such regulation like the forced disconnection of accused offenders (without the right of trial), prosecution of ISPs (providers of the internet pipes)  for allowing users to download copyright protected content.

In the attempt to save a dieing method of business, large corporations and organization (Such as MPAA, RIAA and Comcast) are forcing legislators to extend their legal reach and limiting our rights (especially privacy) so that they may profit from it.

The language of bureaucracy simplified

As much as computers play a large role in our lives, bureaucracy plays an even larger role. We need documents to prove the veracity of other documents and even a simple credit card applications make us feel like we need a lawyer and accountant next to us to explain the written words on the application, much like reading a letter in a foreign language.

That is the reality that Alan Siegal, branding expert and leading authorities on business communication, discuss at TED and presents a simple and sensible redesign of a few legal paperwork. And by doing so the general population would be able to understand the real meaning behind lines and lines legal jargon, sometimes created with the sole purpose of confound those who don’t understand it.

Real Car in a Game Mode

Driving a real car and a simulated car in a video game are quit different, especially due to the different perspective. In a video game you have the advantage of a third person perspective, providing broader vision field, instead of the limited cabin view. But what if you could have the third person perspective on a real car would you be able to perform the same maneuvers and stunts that you are capable in the video game?

The team at Rooster Teeth Labs put that to prove on the first installment of their new series Immersion.

How to Report the News

Have you ever noticed how pretty much all broadcast reports, don’t matter what is the subject all of them are alike. That is because there is a formula for reporting and producing it. Charlie Brooker from BBC London show us how, it is hilarious because it is true.

Gotta love English TV.
